So true, Tim, and I am outraged about this slimey action on the part of Albanese (Dutton is just behaving as we knew he would).. Like you, I thought the promotion of democracy in all its aspects was the name of the government game. Sigh.
Just one thing, if it's not too late - I think you need to clarify that this change won't take effect until 2028, so we only have THIS election to fix things.
Thanks, I might add a footnote/update to that effect. The other "positive" aspect of the delay you mention is that it becomes a bargaining chip in the event of minority government, as Helen Haines has already made clear.
Tim, I don't share your view that we still have the power to challenge this 'enshittification'. Beliefs about what is right and fair have been undermined. The media is not to be believed and sadly, that includes the ABC.
Take for example the ABC appearing in court to justify the sacking of Antoinette Lattouf. Ita Buttrose was sick of receiving complaints about her. Why was she directly receiving these complaints? Are certain people able to directly contact the chair of the ABC? Did she reveal in court the nature and number of those complaints? Surely the complaints would need to have some substance and relate to what was broadcast? Was it permissible for her to carry out the duties of the Managing Director of the ABC?
So, Antoinette Lattouf was sacked for posting something about Gaza on her Facebook page, that the ABC had already posted on theirs? Who are the people who hold such influence?
When Jillian Segal was appointed as an antisemitism special envoy, not all sectors of the Jewish community agreed with that appointment but it proceeded.
What I find questionable is that her husband's companies gave a generous donation to the group, Advance. Now she was appointed by the government to ameliorate a situation so why is her husband donating to a group associated with right-wing causes?
My view is that we have to challenge what is happening and we are almost uniquely positioned (in historical terms) to challenge two-party dominance. I admit the game is stacked against us. I can't go on I go on. That sort of thing. I watched a lot of the Lattouf case and it was horrifying to hear the sheer ignorance and unexamined bias in the way in which ABC staff responded. The rot runs deep and I actually feel a lot less confident of fixing the ABC than I do about the electoral system. The sheer arrogance of the management class came through very clearly too. The whole thing needs to be rebuilt around principles of genuine braodcasting. Instead we have a management made of people with no such understanding or committment, steeped in the logic of commercial media, and endlessly vulnerable to the sort of campign that got Lattouf sacked. Shocking.
Standing shoulder to shoulder with you TD. I agree with every point you write about but be assured you say it much more eloquently and powerfully than I ever could. Really resonates. All power to you, friend.
I note that every newsagent has large signs on top of shop Murdoch rags ..then underneath are racks of headline grabbers again Murdoch .Inside can be found SMH at times and a few Saturday papers but they don’t scream out exciting info on Lady Di or Kate so 🤷🏾♀️ We are in a fragile state while the baby boomers continue to believe in Liberals and sit in cafes with free Murdoch stuff about evil greens …..indies to follow closer to election I noted too that Labor asked me to contribute to Ali France election as she needs grass roots money to oust our Greens candidate etc Can we put stickers out ….frustrated 👹😩🤬
On the upside, I think those outlets have far less influence than they used. Their real power is wielded within the veins and arteries of the party system. They help discipline the political class in a way they no longer influence the general public. Their whole schtik would fall over if some politician had the nerve to ignore them.
i presume by outlets you mean newsagents. While almost nobody reads those corflutes with the Daily Blab headlines any more (nor do many actually purchase hard copy newspapers) the downstream impact of those publications still does determine the 'news of the day' on morning TV and radio broadcasts. That sets the scene for a lot of what the ABC, for example, boadcasts during the day. So, while their influece might be waning, they are certainly not going down without a fight.
"Their whole schtik would fall over if some politician had the nerve to ignore them.”
Yes, this is also what I thought about Jones, Hadley etc, if the politicians called their bluff they’d soon be sitting in the gutter, where they came from.
I cannot believe how useless or more likely perverted, the MSM is, including the ABC on this matter. I know the impact is getting mentioned, but for me it’s more like it’s presented as a “the other side say……”
When it finally hit me that there was a convergence was when Labor supported the bid for Mathias Cormann for his OECD gig.
Cormann had spent years constantly lying about the previous Labor government's economic record and the GFC stimulus yet they rewarded him then one of the first things the lying hypocrite said after pulling the job was that the best way to mitigate climate change was a price on CO2 pollution, exactly what Labor brought in, Cormann lied about and then with his party voted to drop the scheme.
I decided that if Labor couldn't be bothered standing up for their own reputation then why should I do it. If Labor thinks it is acceptable for so many lies to be told about them then I don't support that policy. They also gave the Coalition a 'get out of jail free' card by allowing them to draft legislation for NACC when if they had drafted it with the cross benches, the Coalition would have been toast for all their dodgy schemes and contracts, especially Dutton. Now instead of cleaning up the corruption that is part and parcel of right wing politics we have Dutton level pegging in the polls.
The Cormann appointment is indeed telling, and I hadn't thought of it in that way. I suspect this campaign finance legislation might be clarifying for some people in the same way. It is such a blatant abuse.
Hi Mark, and Peta, being disheartened is what they want you to be. I hope instead you'll find someone on this list that inspires you to volunteer or donate, even if it is from afar. Fierce hope! https://linktr.ee/CommunityIndependentsAU
Look Tim, I’m no intellect by a long shot, but came to this conclusion 3 decades ago. Listening to reporters etc saying that all our politicians had the country’s best interests in mind, but had different ideas of how to do this, used to infuriate me. NO, THEY DON’T. It’s their career path in their chosen party (employer) that is front and centre, nothing else.
All good, dennis! We have been sold a bill of goods for decades now and it would make any sentient person angry. The media-politics nexus has failed us badly in too many ways.

Thank you as always,

Thanks, Gavin. I just want a system that honours the notion of democratic participation.

Our politicians are bought and the msm silenced.

Depressing. That’s it, that’s all I’ve got. Depressing.

That list is getting so long!
I'm dumb enough to admit it completely shocks me.

Tim, my response wasn’t meant to sound like it did, sorry! Just anger, annoyance, disgust etc at how the political system works.
All good, dennis! We have been sold a bill of goods for decades now and it would make any sentient person angry. The media-politics nexus has failed us badly in too many ways.
